NOW is the BEST time to start your hospitality career!

Here is the reality of the situation that most hotels face right now.

Prior to Covid, the industry had the luxury of a few positions and a huge selection of potential candidates, but that has now changed – well somewhat.

The number of potential candidates has not changed, if anything, it has grown over the last two years.  But what has changed is the amount of people applying for those jobs. That is the essence of the problem, and that is why I think now is the best time to start your career in the hospitality industry!

It used to be that when you applied for an open position in a hotel, that is what you were going to do.  You would receive training related to that position and be given every opportunity to succeed.  While you would be exposed to the other departments and positions in the hotel, rarely, if ever, would you be called upon to work in those areas.  So, your knowledge base would be somewhat narrow in scope related to the overall operation of the hotel.

But after Covid, the truly unbelievable number of opportunities that exist for you is, well, unbelievable.  More than just jobs though, this is an opportunity for you to stand out.

Let me be honest with you, with the staffing challenges that most hotels are having now, you might be asked to work in a different department and help-out.  But that is the opportunity that I am speaking about. The opportunity, to expand your knowledge and develop the experience, that can make you more valuable and get you recognized.

Another honest tip for you is that it is easier to stand out in a less crowded field.  Be the outlier who applies for a job then shows up on time and presents themselves professionally.  Be engaged in the interview process.  Show your passion for the industry – because it is a great one!

One of the biggest knocks about the hospitality industry is that it takes too long to move up.  It takes time because of the knowledge and experience needed for some positions.  The conditions are ripe for you to learn on the job at an expedited rate. Does that mean you will be a General Manager next year? No, it doesn’t.  But you might have the opportunity to learn things that you never would have before.

That’s what I did at the start of my career.  I started in Room Service, but if someone called in sick in the restaurant or the lounge, and I was asked to fill in – I always said yes!  Sure, the extra shift and cash came in handy, but for me the most valuable part was the experience.  That experience and skill development made me a valuable employee and helped me lay the foundation for what was to come.

That is what could be waiting for you.

Will it be challenging – YES!

Will it be tough – YES!

Will the skills you develop and the knowledge you acquire set you up for future success – ABSOLUTELY!

There is no better time to start your hospitality career and be the star that you are supposed to be.
